Competitors

The SEO competitor rank tracker built from checks you already run

Every position check already captured the competition. This just reads it back.

No extra spend

An SEO competitor rank tracker with no extra spend

The data is a by product of tracking your own positions.

Every position check stores the top twenty organic results, which means it also stored whoever was above you. Add a competitor domain and Pebble reads that history back rather than going and fetching it again. An SEO competitor rank tracker usually costs a second subscription and a second quota, and here it costs neither, because the checks were already paid for the first time round.

Who to track

Suggested from the domains that keep turning up

A more honest list than the one you would write from memory.

Pebble suggests competitors for you, taken from the domains that appear most often in the SERPs you have already checked. It is a simple idea with a useful side effect: the list is drawn from the searches your customers actually run, not from a category you picked at the start of the year. The names you expect are usually there, and one or two you did not expect usually are as well, which is the reason to look.

The suggestions carry the count of how many of your tracked keywords the domain shows up for, so a publisher that ranks once for a single informational term does not get the same weight as a direct rival sitting in your top ten across half the list. You accept a suggestion with one action and it joins the tracked set immediately, using history that already exists rather than waiting for the next run. Dismiss the ones that are not competitors, an aggregator or a marketplace you will never displace, and they stop being offered.

Ten domains per property is the ceiling, and it is a deliberate one. Competitor rank tracking stops being read when the chart has twenty five lines on it, so the limit keeps the picture legible and forces the question of who genuinely competes with you.

Over time

What the SEO competitor rank tracker shows over time

Ten competitors per property, on one chart.

Track up to ten domains for a property and watch each one's average position across your tracked keywords over time. A single line answers the only question that matters at a glance, which is whether they are coming towards you or drifting away.

Bands

Competitor rank tracking for up to ten domains

An average hides the shape. The bands show it.

Underneath the chart, a table gives each competitor the number of your tracked keywords they hold in the top twenty, their average position, and how those positions are spread across bands. The spread is the part worth reading. Two domains can share an average of nine and be in completely different states, one holding a handful of first places with a long tail behind, the other sitting flat in the middle of page one everywhere.

  • Positions 1 to 3The keywords a competitor owns outright, where movement is rare and meaningful.
  • Positions 4 to 10Page one, but beatable. Most of the useful work sits in this band.
  • Positions 11 to 20Close enough to matter, far enough to be invisible to anyone who only checks page one.

Because the bands are recorded every time you check, they move. A competitor shifting five keywords out of positions eleven to twenty and into four to ten has done real work, even though their headline average barely twitched, and that is exactly the signal an average is built to hide. Watched over a few months, the band distribution tells you whether someone is investing, coasting or quietly retreating, and it tells you before the average catches up.

Gap analysis

Four questions, one competitor at a time

Where you are losing, winning, missing and ahead.

Gap analysis sorts every tracked keyword into losing to them, beating them, they rank and you do not, and you rank and they do not. Those four lists are the work list, the defence list, the clearest gap there is, and what you have that they have not noticed. See the keyword gap analyzer for how each list is built.

Honest about it

It only sees what you have checked

One real limitation, and it is worth understanding.

Competitor rank tracking here compares the keywords you track. It cannot show you a keyword a competitor ranks for that you have never tracked, because Pebble never checked it. If you want the view to widen, widen the tracked list first, then run a check. Keyword research is the place to find the candidates.
